Annual Speed Networking Event

October 4, 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Ohio State University Black Alumni Society (OSUBAS) is excited to host the 2018 Speed Networking Event!  This event is not a career fair or job recruitment initiative, but instead an opportunity for students to connect with successful black Ohio State alumni.

We’re looking for Ohio State black alumni who will come and share success stories about their careers and achievements with current Ohio State students and alumni.

Working with Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Multicultural Center staff on campus, we also plan to invite three or four local companies to share information about opportunities within the community. In addition, we plan to serve food and hand out gift cards (i.e. Barnes and Noble, Amazon and Target) to help increase student attendance and participation.

Speed Networking is an event with an accelerated twist.  The program is specifically designed to allow students an opportunity to introduce themselves and make contact with professionals in their respective field(s) of interest.  Students will meet with alumni and provide a resume and/or business card.  Students will come prepared to ask 3-4 questions for alumni to answer, who in turn will provide business cards to be used to help students follow up after the networking event.

Speed Networking Format:

The MLK room will be set up with tables and this round-robin format will move briskly. The alumni remain seated at their table, the students will move around, rotating tables approximately every 5-10 minutes. The agenda and program format will be finalized once we have confirmed speakers, as well as student/alumni participation.

Topics for alumni to prepare:

  • Area of expertise
  • What advice can you offer the students?
  • Introductions to other potential contacts
  • Quick history of your career path
  • Recruitment opportunities for students — What are you or your company looking for?
  • Prepare an introduction that provides a snapshot of your professional background
  • Be prepared to accept resumes
  • If you have brochures and/or handouts, please bring at least 100 to hand out
  • Remember this is a “no fear of rejection” atmosphere — we are here to help our students
  • Inform students of how they should follow up with you after the event, LinkedIn connections, etc.
  • Bring business cards to share with students and fellow alumni
